If it was a gift inside a planner, you could hope it would encourage a teen to read the real thing. Their answer to downloaded books, and hungry minds stuck on a bus in a traffic jam. A sampler. It doesn't have to be all bad, if it was used as a springboard and not a substitute.

Strangely enough it reminds me of an english teacher I had when i was 12. He made his small class keep a tiny book and write at least two page summaries on each book we read: Some from a reading list, and some we had picked from the library. It became a thing of joy and pride for me and opened my eyes and mind. Our home life was pretty troubled at the time and it had greatly affected my schoolwork. Because of that teacher and that little book, I went from being in the "d" stream to placing second in the "a" stream by the time the final exams rolled around, and the whole direction of my life changed. If nothing else it gave me the confidence to follow my dreams. to dream at all.

and such a little book.
