I started playing around with Linux back in the slackware 1 days. Never could get it to handle modems properly for some reason. I got tired of dealing with os 10.2 on my ancient Mac, and started trying linux distros. I tried Yellow Dog, then Ubuntu. I couldn't be happier with Ubuntu (even though the modem issues have cropped up in the new update.) I don't think that I want to try anything else. And I'm enjoying Emacs too, something I thought I'd never learn.

I'm in the process of switching from SUSE 9.2 to Ubuntu - most of my desktop machines (with one notable exception) run Ubuntu now. It's Debian, but for desktop users. (Debian remains my first choice for servers, however.)

I've been using Red Hat (and now Fedora) for years, with the occasional dabble in OpenBSD or Debian. Ubuntu is intriguing me these days, and your post is making me think more about a changeover. If the LiveCD could mount my home drive and use my home directory, it'd be even better as a test drive. Maybe it can and I need to give it a shot. 'In a short time you would persuade me to become a[n Ubuntu user].'

not a user nor a techno geek but I've seen it in use, and have to comment on how beautiful the backgrounds are. well most are. they are apparently releasing one professional photograph a month. a few remind me of calvin klein ads with slightly more healthy models. I was first struck by the logo, not something I generally notice... but I really love this one.
