Considering DIY Planner v2 Designs

Had a sleepless night last night, so I started thinking about a few elements of the existing DIY Planner templates that still bother me. One aspect is the design: it’s solid and non-offensive, but it’s also very staid and blocky. I need to pursue a more modern design, but something that’s classic enough to not feel out-of-fashion in just a few short months. It also has to feel fairly professional. (That is, I’m not stringing daisies, dandelions and dancing bears across the top. ;-) ) I had a few spare minutes during breakfast to do a quick mock-up. Any feedback?

By the way, I’ve now added a direct link to the DIY Planner to the sidebar at right. That will always point at the most recent release.

  1. Doug,
I think “out-of-the-way” look of the DIYPlanner is a feature, not a defect.

If we were voting, I’d pick the 1.0 design over that featured in this entry.

    Doug,

Thanks for all your work so far, and it’s great to see that you’re keeping up momentum on design development.

FWIW, I believe the very low-key 1.0 design has the edge over this latest proposal. I would also omit the large panels of grey tone on all sheets, just keeping the shading to smaller elements like checkboxes (which now look really good).

The page headings might be better at top right for odd # pages and top left for even # pages, allowing for a quick riffle and scan through mixed sheets.

Anyway, my own sleepless night has only produced a striking porcupineapple hairstyle, so these are minor quibbles.

    Thanks again.

Keep it simple… but how about replacing 1.0′s solid black line at the top of each page with a grey – all that black ink is killing my inkjet printer! ;-)
