Free Mail & Hosting at SpyMac

Spymac is one of those little gems on the Net that you just trip across, and think, “Wow, I wish everybody knew about this.”

Compared to other services like Hotmail, Yahoo, and scores of pay mail/hosting sites, SpyMac really stands out. Originally a service aimed squarely at Mac users (hence the name), it has really been growing by leaps and bounds in recent months, and is great for Windows and Linux folks too. Sign-up is free, and they give you plenty of goodies, including:

  • A free email address along with 1 Gb of email storage, accessible from both webmail and a real honest-to-goodness mail client (like Thunderbird, Eudora, Mozilla Messenger, Apple Mail, Microsoft LookOut, etc.). This is especially handy for dial-up users that just want to download their mail and write new messages off-line, not to mention all the added perks inherent in using a great email client. (Did I mention Thunderbird?)
  • Your own personalised “site” (e.g.,
  • 350 Mb of storage space for your website, files, images, etc.
  • Your own blog.
  • The ability to create your own online image gallery.
  • A vibrant community, with interesting forums, auctions, special deals, and more.

So what’s the catch? Well, they would like you to pay for more storage space and capabilities. However, you’re under no obligation. I’ve been using SpyMac for a few months now, and I’m quite impressed. There have been times when email hasn’t been accessible for a few minutes, but given the quality of the service, I have no qualms about a tiny bit of downtime.

Highly recommended if you want to stake out a little corner of the Net without investing any money.
